Q: Why did you join Biba?
A couple things. One was because it was an interesting space, so it was something different than what I had done before, but more importantly, it was a space where I saw the momentum of the market going. That is, people are working remote and working in a more flexible environment, than traditional 9-to-5 in the office type of thing. The founders of the company were some of the best programmers I've worked with at Symantec, or in my career, for that matter. So that was exciting to join a team that was both very experienced, that I also knew, and they were basically the top players in that programming field.
Q: What is your working environment like?
I have an office at home and I usually work all day. In fact, I was sending an e-mail to Carlin at 1am yesterday. I intermix work and free time, personal time, in between, so working at Biba is giving me that flexibility, which is great. It is also the way I traditionally work. Even though I've always kind of worked for Bay Area companies, like Symantec, I've always worked mostly out of my house and Biba has made it that much easier to do so.
Q: When you did program, what was your favorite language?
I'm embarrassed to say that I know very few languages. I programmed almost all in C and I really only professionally programmed in two languages: BASIC and C. C is my favorite and probably the reason why it's my favorite is because it allows low-level access to hardware. When I first started programming, it was on DOS and at that time, you controlled the screen, you controlled the keyboard, you controlled the disk drive, the driver itself, and so you needed that access, but the alternative was to program in what's called Assembly language. Assembly language doesn't translate very well onto other platforms, it's hard to maintain, it's very tedious, it's very error-prone, so C was a big step up from that alternative.
Q: What’s your free time activity/hobby? Why do you like it?
I love to travel. I've been to about 45 countries and I like to go to places which are warm and have good water because I like to scuba dive. When I can't get away, I enjoy reading and hiking. I like to learn about new cultures and other people. I also like going to museums and historic sites and just the learning process of life.
Q: What’s your biggest pet peeve?
My guys are going to love me for this one: delivering things late.
Q: Drink of choice?
I am addicted to Coca-Cola. I always have a couple cans lying around.
Q: What’s your guilty pleasure?
Broadway musicals! I LOVE musicals! I have season tickets at the Pantages theatre.
Q: If you weren’t a programmer, what would you be?
I would have probably be a bean counter at some company. I think it's part of my meticulous personality that would have been a good match.
Q: If you could be an animal, what would be and why?
A dog; everyone loves a dog, everyone is friendly to a dog and they're always happy! I don't even know what a depressed dog would look like.
Q: If you could have one superpower what would it be and why?
This not so much a superpower, this is an age thing: I wish I could see again! It's just so frustrating when you're somewhere and you can't read something.
